What the keyboard test checks

This test shows a full-size keyboard on screen and marks each key as you press it. Pressed keys turn green, and keys you are holding down are highlighted, so you can see which keys respond and which do not. Counters show how many keys you have pressed and how many remain, and the last key shows its key value, code, key code and location.

The layout covers the function row, the navigation keys, the arrows and the numeric keypad. Where the browser supports the Keyboard API, the labels follow your own layout, such as AZERTY or QWERTZ; elsewhere they update as you type. Keys are read in this tab only. They are not logged, stored or sent anywhere.

How to test your keyboard

  1. Click an empty area of the page so it receives your key presses.
  2. Press every key once and check that it turns green on the layout.
  3. Hold several keys together and check that each one stays highlighted.
  4. Read the code and location of the last key to spot keys that send the wrong value.
  5. Click Reset all to start again.

Keyboard test FAQ

How do I check if a key is broken?
Press the key once and see whether it turns green. If nothing happens, the key is not registering. If it lights up but shows a different key, the layout setting or the keyboard firmware is the cause. If it only works when pressed hard or repeats by itself, the switch may be worn or dirty, and cleaning under the keycap often helps.
What are ghosting and key rollover?
Rollover is how many keys a keyboard can report at once. Ghosting is when a key press is missed, or an extra one appears, while several keys are held. To check, hold a combination you use, such as W, A, Shift and Space, and see whether every key stays highlighted. Many office keyboards drop keys in some three- or four-key combinations.
Why don't the Fn or media keys register?
The Fn key is usually handled inside the keyboard itself and never reaches the browser. Media, brightness and some function keys are often handled by the operating system or keyboard software, so the browser may not receive them either. If such a key works in your system, it is not broken, even if it does not show here.
Are my key presses logged or sent anywhere?
No. Key presses are read by this browser tab to update the layout and are kept only in the page's memory. They are not logged, stored or sent to a server, and they are cleared when you reset or close the page. The tab only receives keys while it is in focus.
