What the microphone test checks

This test shows whether your browser can hear your microphone. Once you allow access, you see a live waveform and a volume level, with a status that says whether sound is detected, low or missing. You can pick a specific input from the device list, which helps when a headset, a webcam and a laptop each have their own microphone.

You can also record a short clip and play it back to hear how you sound to others on a call. The recording is held in this tab's memory until you download or delete it, and it is gone when you close the page. Your audio is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

  1. Choose your microphone from the list, or keep the default.
  2. Click Start test and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
  3. Speak at a normal volume and watch the waveform and the volume level.
  4. Click Start recording, say a sentence, then stop and play it back.
  5. Download the clip if you want to keep it, or delete it.

Microphone test FAQ

Why is my microphone not working in the browser?
Check that the browser has permission to use it, that the right input is selected, and that it is not muted by a switch or in your system sound settings. Close other apps that may be using it, such as call apps. On Windows and macOS, the system privacy settings must also allow your browser to use the microphone.
How do I allow microphone access in Chrome, Safari or Firefox?
In Chrome and Firefox, click the icon at the left of the address bar, set Microphone to Allow and reload the page. In Safari, open Safari, then Settings for this website, and set Microphone to Allow. If you blocked access earlier, the browser will not ask again until you change this setting.
Why is my microphone so quiet?
Raise the input level in your system sound settings and move closer to the microphone. If the status shows Low volume detected while you speak normally, the input gain is likely too low. If you can record but hear nothing on playback, check your output with the Speaker test.
Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
No. Your audio is analyzed and recorded in this browser tab and is never uploaded. The recording stays in memory until you download it, delete it or close the page. When you download it, your browser saves it as a WebM, Ogg or M4A file, depending on what it supports.
